Swift Water Rescue - Throw Line, Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine

The Swiftwater Rescue course is divided into two parts: Swiftwater Rescue 1 and Swiftwater Rescue 2. Swiftwater Rescue 1  focuses on self-rescue skills for open-water activities. Basic personal safety equipment, open water swimming skills, and rescue principles are introduced. This course is ideal for kayakers and whitewater rafters.

Swiftwater Rescue 2 builds on foundational self-rescue skills from Swiftwater Rescue 1. Swimming skills and techniques for a variety of open-water environments will be introduced. Focus is placed on technique and equipment usage in the rescue of others.

  • Rescue philosophy and attitude:
    • Aims of the RLSSC
    • General rules and Philosophy
    • The ladder approach and personal safety
    • Behavior & prevention
  • Hydrology
    • Volume
    • Gradient
    • Velocity / Force relationship
    • Floods & flash floods
    • Currents: Water speed within a straight current, around a bend, in a constriction, around an obstacle, in an eddy
    • Obstacles & traps: Undercuts, Sweepers, Log jams, Foot entrapment, Bridge pilings, Vehicular entrapment, Ice & Ice jams
    • Hydrology of a Weir
  • 3- Self-Rescue
    • Basic personal equipment: P.F.D., Whistle, Knife, Helmet, throwbag, footwear, thermal clothing.
    • Swimming in moving water: Preventing foot entrapment, offensive & defensive swimming, swimming in a weir.
    • River crossing: In groups, alone with an aid, alone, Using a group to cross an injured person

Swiftwater Rescue 2

  •  Rescue Equipment:
    • Static line & ropes for river use
    • Pulleys, Carabiners, Anchor Webbing & cordelettes
  • Swimming
    • Breathing techniques for whitewater, crossing an eddyline, swimming over a drop, swimming into a log jam.
    • Offensive and defensive Swimming Techniques
    • Tows & Carries (Contact rescues)
  • Throw bag Use
    • Methods for getting a line across a stream
    • Extrication techniques
  • Mechanical Advantage
    • Types of rope & webbing
    • Safety principles
    • Armstrong (10 boy scout method)
    • Anchors
    • Vector pull
    • Knots for “Z” drag
    • Basic 2:1, 3:1 and 6:1 or 9:1
  • Use of Rescue craft (various plat forms)
    • Craft selection, Hazards & limitations
    • Safe strategies for approach by craft

Course Details

8 Hours for each level of the program

A current Standard First Aid with Level C CPR.

Swiftwater Level 1 is a pre-requisite for Swiftwater Level 2

Swiftwater Rescue 1

Swiftwater Rescue 2

Re-Certification is a 1 day program that requires demonstration of skills at both Swiftwater Rescue 1 & 2 levels.

Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine certification that meets NFPA standards

Certification can be used for work in other provinces and territories

$170 plus GST for each level.  Register for both levels of training for the reduced price of $305 + GST.

Courses are presented in conjunction with the University of Calgary.  Private bookings are also available.

If you need to cancel your registration for an upcoming program, then the following terms will apply.

  1. If you cancel your registration 14 days or more prior to a program, all course fees will be returned to you except for a $25 administrative fee.
  2. If you cancel your registration less than 14 days prior to an upcoming program, then a refund will NOT be issued. Fees can be applied to another program that is being offered within 12 months of the original course date.*PLEASE NOTE THAT COURSE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS MUST STILL BE MET
  3. No transfers are offered on or after 7 days prior to the course start date. A $25 administrative fee will be charged on all program transfers.
  4. In the event that Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine cancels an upcoming program, you will receive a full refund of your course fees.
  5. PLEASE NOTE: When you register for a program that is offered in conjunction with Yamnuska Mountain Adventures, the University of Calgary or Camp Chief Hector, their transfer and cancellation policies are in effect since they handle course registrations. Their cancellation and transfer policies override the Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine policy.
